(HealthDay News) -- The more cancer screening tests you undergo, the higher your risk of having at least one false-positive result, researchers say.
While that conclusion may seem like common sense, it's not something that patients or doctors often consider, suggest the authors of a study in the May/June issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.

Battered Women's Ills Go Beyond Bruises
(HealthDay News) -- Women abused by their romantic partners are more likely to suffer from a long list of medical maladies than other women, a new study shows.
The diseases, many of which aren't traditionally connected with violence, include abdominal pain, chest pain, headaches, acid reflux, urinary tract infections and menstrual disorders.
"Roughly half of the diagnoses we examined were more common in abused women than in other women," study author Amy Bonomi, an associate professor of human development and family science at Ohio State University, in a school news release. "Abuse is associated with much more than cuts and bruises." Read more...

Vitamin C and Cancer
The article below is from the current newsletter of OCCAM, our NIH center for CAM therapy.
This is sad that they combine C with chemo and the tumor grows much larger so it means that vitamin C protected against the DNA damage the chemo normally induces. That does not mean that Pauling was wrong. He saw this as a monotherapy, i.e. used all by itself without chemo would extend the average cancer patients life considerably.
Finally this document admits that the Mayo Clinic study to destroy Pauling’s Vitamin C research on cancer purposely refused to even try to copy his protocol!! The truth finally begins to leak out! Read more...

Scientists Spot Clue to Cancer's Aggressiveness
(HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they have gained insight into whether certain aggressive cancers -- including those that attack the pancreas, breast and skin -- will respond to a certain anti-cancer drug.
The key appears to lie in a molecular signature inside tumors, researchers reported in the Sept. 6 online issue of Nature Medicine.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that a receptor on the surface of some tumor cells can start a process that leads cells to become more aggressive. An anti-cancer drug called dasatinib (Sprycel), approved for treating a form of leukemia, blocks the process.
Researchers say figuring out whether the receptor exists on tumor cells could indicate whether the tumors might respond to the drug. Read more...

(HealthDay News) -- People struggling with a cancer diagnosis and treatment may need a lot of extra help and support.
The American Cancer Society offers these support suggestions for people with cancer, and their loved ones:
• Find a support group that meets a local hospital, by telephone or online.
• Enlist a nursing service that offers support, and if needed, home health care.
• Find a nutritional service that provides help and advice from professional dietitians.
• Use a rehabilitation service that provides physical and occupational therapy.
• Seek spiritual support from a local church or synagogue.
• Obtain social services, which may include counseling or financial aid.

Vitamin studies always seem to stir controversy, but certainly not visions of death. On that score, last week's report on antioxidant vitamins, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was a doozy. The researchers concluded that people taking the antioxidants vitamins A, its precursor beta carotene, and vitamin E, for whatever reason, at whatever dose, and for however long, may be putting their lives in jeopardy. Ministry calls for calm, says dangerous strain of virus not found in Thailand
BANGKOK: -- An emergency watch has been ordered for the swine flu outbreak which is now spreading in Mexico and threatening to turn into a pandemic, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday.
In New Zealand, 22 students and three teachers have been quarantined amid fears they may have been infected by swine influenza during a language trip to Mexico, where at least 81 deaths have been blamed on the virus, CNN reported.
Pubic Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai urged people to stay calm, saying the H1N1 viral breed which had caused the disease in Mexico had never been reported here.
However, anyone travelling to the US or Mexico should monitor health advisories issued by both Thai and foreign authorities, he said.
Dr Praj Bunyawongwiroj, the minฌistry's permanent secretary, said he would not recommend people to stop eating pork, but noted that humantohuman transmission was possible through direct contact of body fluids or mucus through sneezing and coughing.
People down with the common flu should stay away from the public and keep themselves in good health until the flu was gone, he said. Read more...

Acupuncture, Exercise May Ease Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
(HealthDay News) -- Acupuncture and exercise may bring some relief to the one in 10 women of childbearing age who suffer from a common endocrine disease called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Women with the condition have elevated levels of androgen hormones -- including testosterone -- and often develop ovarian cysts, irregular menstrual cycles and infertility. A key feature of the disease is an increase in the high muscle sympathetic nerve activity. This regular constricting of blood vessels, which normally occurs during the body's fight or flight response to danger, can increase a woman's chances of developing diabetes and high blood pressure or having a heart attack or stroke.
The study, appearing online in a recent issue of the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, looked at 20 women who received either regular low-frequency electro-acupuncture on body parts commonly thought to be linked to the ovaries, took part in thrice-weekly moderate exercise or received no treatment at all over a 16-week period.
