THE ART OF HEALING IN BIOLOGICAL DENTISTRY

I am one of the few dentists who pioneered the change in dentistry from the "Metal Era" (dark) to the "Ceramic and Plastic Era" (light). When I began removing metal fillings (mercury) 28 years ago, there were not many dental materials available that could be trusted. Thanks to us, the "metal-free" dentists, companies began research toward better and more cosmetic materials. The "Art of Healing" in Biologic Dentistry first began when patients felt healthier after the removal of mercury and metal crowns. This eventually became the "Art of Dentistry", when no metal existed on any surface of any tooth, and the patient could not visibly distinguish between fillings or crowns and their natural teeth. After seeing the "light" in this new age of dentistry, the patients' trust and comfort became the main focus. I possess great skill in putting the patient at ease. But, what can I do when someone has a real dental phobia? The answer is simple; I offer conscious IV sedation, which allows me to finish the dental work in one appointment. The IV Conscious Sedation Procedure was first preformed at our clinic in 1998 at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico under the guidance of Dr. Hal huggins. He observed that with this sedation, the patient felt great and healed faster, no matter how extensive the surgery. And, the patients with a dental phobia returned, feeling a new confidence and security the next time they had to sit in the dental chair. This is my gift from the patient to me. There is nothing more beautiful than having my patients return with confidence and open communication; This is where their healing begins. Before the "Art of Dentistry", materials were limited to providing only functionality to the patient's teeth. Now, we can also perform a "work of art" on their smiles. But, one cannot smile if their health is not good, no matter how beautiful their teeth are. The ultimate accomplishment is a "healthy" smile. And, that is my experience throughout my career in Biological Dentistry.
