Amalgam free Dentistry
There is much discussion about the toxic content of this filling material. At St Leonards Holistic Dental Care, we believe it is an outdated material that may be affecting your health. Amalgam fillings can be removed safely when the correct precautions are taken. Newer, more advanced tooth coloured materials can be used to replace mercury amalgam. Continue Reading >>

No dentist? Oh, no!
Enjoying lunch while looking out over the gorgeous view from your backcountry home, you bite down hard on a nut, hear a loud crack, and immediately feel excruciating pain from a broken tooth. Rare? No, it occurs all the time.
Dental emergencies can occur at home or in the wilderness without warning and can incapacitate a person in an instant. “No problem, I’ll get right over to the dentist,” you think. Hopefully, that is possible, but not always. You may live some distance from a dentist, it may be a night or weekend when it is hard to find one, or there may not be any available.
One of the first things that stop during a disaster is dental care. Major natural disasters, such as earthquakes, fires, or floods, and human disasters, such as terrorism or riots, close dental offices in a second. Electrical shortages, as seen in California recently, or any disruption of the regional power grids and there is no help since dentists can’t operate without electricity. Hospitals rarely have any dental services, so you could be on your own for hours or days.
Since dental first aid is rarely taught in first aid classes, information presented here is intended to help you in an emergency situation when no professional dental help is available. It is not intended to be a substitute for proper dental care. Continue Reading >>

Study Suggests Gum Disease Increases Men's Cancer Risk
CHICAGO—June 4, 2008—Most people already know that maintaining oral health is a vital component of achieving overall health, but a recent study reveals why it is especially crucial that men pay close attention to their teeth and gums. Research published in the June issue of The Lancet Oncology found that men with a history of gum disease are 14 percent more likely to develop cancer than men with healthy gums. In fact, researchers uncovered that men with periodontal disease may be:- 49 percent more likely to develop kidney cancer
- 54 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer
- 30 percent more likely to develop blood cancers
- “Previous research has suggested a potential link betwe
en gum disease and other conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis,” says Dr. Susan Karabin, President of the AAP. “This study should prompt men to be particularly mindful of their teeth and gums now that gum disease may play a role in the onset of cancer.”
Gum disease can be managed with daily brushing and flossing, and routine visits to a dental health professional. Men who develop gum disease should consider consulting with a periodontist, the dentist specially trained in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. A periodontist can help develop an effective treatment plan to best manage the disease.
To learn more about gum disease, locate a periodontist, or to find out if you are at risk for periodontal diseases, visit perio.org or call (800) FLOSS-EM (800/356-7736).

Stay Away from "Holistic"
A significant number of dentists have gone overboard in espousing pseudoscientific theories, particularly in the area of nutrition. Dentists who identify themselves as "holistic" or "biological" typically claim that disease can be prevented by maintaining "optimum" overall health or "wellness."
In their offices, this typically involves inappropriate diagnostic tests, recommendations for expensive dietary supplements and/or homeopathic products; a plastic bite appliance; unnecessary replacement of amalgam fillings; and/or removal of root-canal-treated teeth. John E. Dodes, D.D.S., an expert on dental quackery, has remarked that "wellness" is "something for which quacks can get paid when there is nothing wrong with the patient. Continue Reading >>
